Our Directions:
Sydney Institute's Directions for 2008-2012
It is imperative that Sydney Institute shift from its traditional course based approach to a new market based approach in order to remain competitive and responsive to meeting the needs of our customers. The plan identifies the key market segments we need to target:
- Enterprise
We need to be involved in upskilling existing workers and providing workforce solutions for industry, targetting employers, enterprises, Industry, existing workers and apprentices and trainees
- Tertiary
We need to provide increased pathways to work and higher education, targetting career advancers and changers, those seeking to make the transition from school to work or higher education, and international students
- Vocational
We need to provide foundation and vocational pathways to enable people to gain the necessary skills to find work, including the transition from welfare to work, and the skills needed to change career directions.

TAFE in the 21st Century
This discussion paper outlines the major initiatives and directions behind the TAFE in the 21st Century Project. Sydney Institute will be committed along with the rest of TAFE to the goals of providing flexible and cost effective training to meet the needs of industry and community in the 21st Century
The Purchasing Agreement
The Purchasing Agreement represents a new model for allocating our mainstream funding, whereby the Government (State) each year "purchases" training from TAFE Institutes at an agreed "price". The training we deliver is classified according to particular RAM (Resource Allocation Model) categories some examples of which are: Manufacturing, Tourism, Hospitality, Information Technology, Design, Media, General Education and Access. Each Institute and College enters into an agreement with DET to deliver an amount of training (measured as ASH - Actual Student Hours) in some or all of these categories at a set $/ASH rate. It is called an "agreement" because the rates and quantities can vary according to local conditions across different Insitutes, and across the different Colleges in an Insitute.
Our Sources of Funding
TAFE and Sydney Insitute rely increasingly on sources of funding from special Government initiatives and programs, Commercial business and our International Students.
For more information about Sydney Institute and its place in the Vocation Education and Training system see the section "Our Environment".
TAFE Workforce Development Guarantee
