Introduction
Welcome to the myLeadersip wiki help area, here you can find information about the technology behind the site and how to register and enter/edit content.
As you may already know the myLeadership site is what is referred to as a wiki. A wiki is a website in which users can edit and create content. It's an example of a range of contemporary web platforms referred to as social software enabling users to update online content directly from their web browsers. This wiki is built using the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source_software">Open-source</a> MediaWiki platform, the same platform which underpins wikipedia, the online collaborative encyclopedia project. If you would like more information about wikis there is no better place to start than <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki">wikipedia's own entry on the topic</a>. For more information on <a href="http://www.mediawiki.org/">Mediawiki see their website</a>.
Creating an account
While you can edit and create pages on this wiki without creating yourself an account we encourage you to do so we know who has edited what and when. It will help build the online community around the leadership program and foster a collaborative learning environment.
To create a new account please visit our Create_Account page which will step you through the process.
Edit your own page
Once you create an account your user name will appear at the top of the Personal tools section. This links to your own personal page on the wiki. This is a good place to begin learning how to edit pages.
Use this page to create a personal profile, add a picture and some info about yourself and what you hope to get from the program.
NOTE: when you click on the page for the first time it will open a Link to a new page ready for input, once you have entered some info and saved the page it will be created.
You will se the following text “There is currently no text in this page, you can search for this page title in other pages or edit this page”
Click the “edit this page” hyperlink
You can find other team members pages by clicking on the View Users button in the Site Tools section. Simply click on their user names to view their pages.
Editing Tools
In MediaWiki there are two methods for editing pages.
Wiki Markup
This comprises a native text based language which can be used to format content, create links, add media etc. While it's relatively easy to learn and use, for the myLeadership wiki we have turned it off in favor of a WYSIWYG or word style editor.
For example using media wiki markup to make text bold you would type Bold text or to create a hyperlink <nowiki>link title</nowiki>
FCK Editor
We have opted to enable an extension to mediawiki called FCK Editor, this provides a word style editor to enter and edit content on each page.
In many ways you must choose one or the other on a page, wikimarkup is incompatible with the code generated by the FCK editor. We have effectively turned off wikimarkup for this wiki so you don't need to worry about it. Neverthe less there is a few wikimarkup methods that we still need to know so we can link to uploaded files on a page or embed and image.
Editing pages
To edit a page simply click the edit button
at the top of the page or click a <nowiki>[Edit]</nowiki> button next to a section header on the page to edit that section alone.
This will open the page for editing with the FCK editor tool bar displayed at the top of the page.
