Vision

A leader with vision develops strategy and provides direction

Leaders have a vision and sense of purpose that drives their decisions. They focus on the outputs specific to their faculty or unit, but they also link those outputs to broader Institute goals, providing a sense of shared purpose and direction for their staff. A leader with vision:

  • Formulates vision and provides strategic direction
  • Thinks globally, long term and strategically
  • Gathers and analyses information to realise opportunities
  • Develops effective strategies for achieving the vision
  • Creates a shared sense of purpose and direction
  • Responds flexibly to change

A leader with vision communicates with influence

Leadership is all about influence. Leaders are comfortable communicating with a wide range of audiences. Listening, respecting and valuing others are key components of their successful communication. A leader with vision:

  • Respects and values others
  • Takes time to listen and talk to others and establish rapport
  • Positively influences the behaviours and opinions of others
  • Communicates effectively with a range of audiences
  • Mediates and negotiates agreed outcomes
  • Produces written communication that is clear and concise
  • Establishes and maintains professional credibility
