Overview

As part of TAFE Online 2 (TOL2) there is a sub project Access to New Technologies. The aim of the Access to New Technologies project is to implement a range of new technologies and conduct trials in Institute learning environments across TAFE NSW. In the first stage in June 2006, Sydney Institute received $130,000 in funding and with this purchased wireless network access hardware. As we have already made considerable progress with mobile technologies it was identified that wireless access was a priority for trial by the Institute.

The second stage, for which Sydney Institute has been given a budget of approximately $20,000 is to conduct trials of new technologies in semester 2, 2006. The budget is to support professional development and evaluation of the outcomes and impact of the new technologies on teachers, students and other Institute staff. The emphasis is on teaching and learning.

The new technologies included in this project are: wireless network access, video conferencing, mobile technologies (mp3 recorders, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), notebooks) and web conferencing. The web conferencing tool is Adobe Connect which is a desktop application that allows the facilitation of online sessions for multiple users that includes voice, video, and text communication tools. As well as interaction with materials online such as PowerPoint, web searching, video, quizzes, debating, polling, conferencing and so on. Adobe Connect was purchased for all Institutes to trial as part of stage 2 of this project. For more information on Adobe Connect click here. In the second stage, it has been proposed that Sydney Institute will:

  • Conduct a trial of Adobe Connect with Institute Managers (IMs) with the aim of introducing IMs to the use of Breeze as a meeting tool and to increase their awareness of the possibility of how the software may be used in teaching and learning.
  • Convene an online conference using Adobe Connect to introduce the tool to a wide audience of Institute staff and to incorporate professional development on mobile devices.
  • Support the use of Breeze by teaching sections to evaluate its effectiveness as a facilitation tool with students.
  • Provide a wireless lounge for Institute staff. This will be at Ultimo due to efficiencies for the Information Technology Systems Unit as this will be the first roll out of this type of technology.

These initiatives were presented to the Board of Management and endorsed. The recommendations from the Board were to support the initiatives outlined and to convene a steering committee to oversee the project implementation and the evaluation process. It was also agreed to appoint a project officer to help implement the project.
