Animal Studies - Ultimo- Canine Grooming Techniques
Focus of Project
The project focuses on providing greater flexible options, enhancing a more student-centred approach and improving learning.
It aims at increasing flexibility to teach Canine Grooming based on a strong need to use mobile hydrobathing techniques... anywhere, anytime.
Institute funding allowed teacher release time for the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences. This involved over two months of intense resource development consisting of powerpoint presentations, digital images and videos. This also allowed staff to develop strong industry relationships to get access to some very useful commercial videos.
Educational Technology Used
Powerpoint presentations using Adobe Presenter incorporating video files and audio
Impact of the project
Dr Terry Ly discusses how mobile canine grooming is moving clients towards TAFE
Listen to Dr Terry Ly in a podcast interview with Paula Williams from Learning & Innovation, Ultimo, TAFE NSW Sydney Institute. Mobile learning at its best...!
This project achieved two major outcomes:
- The development of online digital resources for teachers in Canine Grooming relating to the profession of Mobile Hydrobathing
- The development of strong partnership links with industry
A Commercial Need
Potential clients were inquiring whether TAFE currently ran a commercial course in dog grooming. Interest in a commercial course intensified and the response was to develop a one day commercial course providing flexible delivery options in particular remote access options. The outcome was to launch this one day course to market the Veterinary Sciences's commercial course which was to take place in three phases as follows:
- First phase is a 1 full day course looking at how to do your grooming
- Second phase is a 4 day intensive course which teaches students commercially used techniques and types of tools including operating and understanding hydrobathing mobile units for dog grooming
- Third phase is Specialised Grooming such as poodles and special cuts
Where to Now?
The future outlook for this project is to implement this commercial course in a virtual classroom and to move away from face to face, physical environments by using Adobe Connect webinar technology. Ideally, the project will change the current paradigm from the existing environment and make this a more work-based learning and student-centred experience. More particularly, it looks at expanding the delivery of this course to International students wishing to apply and study remotely. Sydney Institute VET Sciences has received interest from overseas countries as far as Tokyo, Japan wishing to apply for this commercial course.
