Equella Pilot Project
Project Brief
TAFE eLearning Systems (TeLS) seeks to evaluate the implementation of an institution-wide Learning Content Management System (LCMS) / Learning Object Repository (LOR) in support of content creation, refreshment, discovery, retrieval and publication. Specifically, TeLS wishes to trial the EQUELLA LCMS/LOR in this role and to this end plans to conduct a structured pilot program wherein EQUELLA is implemented in support of business requirements across a sample of representative business problems.
In addition to addressing existing business problems, the pilot will collect and document high-level business requirements. The success of the pilot will then be evaluated against success criteria stemming from these activities.
The pilot will have formal and informal components. The formal trial will have defined stakeholder groups, scope and measurable outcomes and will be conducted across several representative environments. In comparison, the informal trial will expose stakeholders outside of the formal scope to the deployed systems and allow collection of informal feedback and unique viewpoints on possibilities opened up by the deployment of the systems.

Project Objectives
The main objectives of the formal trial are as follows:
- To configure and demonstrate seamless, simple interaction between LMSs in selected representative TAFE Institutes and the EQUELLA LCMS for storing, sharing, finding and using learning content.
- To configure EQUELLA to support the workflow and business requirements for content development and publication in OTEN, the Distance Education arm of TAFE NSW.
- To demonstrate support for business models with complex permissions and sharing requirements (e.g. with my institute, with all institutes, with specific institutes, with some external groups, with some internal groups, etc).
- To prove that existing content can be effectively migrated into EQUELLA and determine the benefits of the LCMS/LOR for ongoing content management compared to existing systems (i.e. the proliferation of existing content in locations such as local hard drives, shared server drives, USB keys, SharePoint sites and miscellaneous databases, etc).
- To demonstrate that EQUELLA can operate as an effective repository for curricula and related knowledge objects extending beyond standard, student- facing learning content (e.g. extend to manage curricula materials, etc).
Project Scope of Formal Trial
Three key business problems to be addressed by the trial implementation of Equella:
- TAFE Institutes Case: Access, discovery, creation and sharing of mainstream course content via an LMS
- OTEN Case: Learning content creation, refreshment and publication
- Industry Skills Unit (ISU) Case: Content creation, refreshment and publication
Our Involvement
Sydney Institute has been invited to participate in the “TAFE Institute Case” in the Equella Pilot Project. Details of this case study are highlighted as below.
TAFE Institute Case: access, discovery, creation and sharing of mainstream course content as used by, for example, a teacher in a representative TAFE institute operating via an LMS such as Moodle. Specifically this will include the following:
- Migrate an existing source of content for use in courses (e.g. IMS package learning content on a file server, TES assessment resources, etc).
- In a nominated TAFE with an existing LMS, select a handful of courses, take the content from those courses and migrate it to EQUELLA while moving or creating appropriate metadata schema nodes, contribution wizard, and associated components.
- Train users in the use of EQUELLA via the LMS interface including:
- Discovery of EQUELLA Learning Objects
- Publication into the LMS of EQUELLA Learning Objects.
- As far as possible, measure and identify benefits and additional requirements including documentation of key business rules (see Business Requirements Documentation)
