Overview
Welcome to the myLearning wiki help area, here you can find information about the technology behind the site and how to register and enter/edit content.
As you may already know the myLearning site is what is referred to as a wiki. A wiki is a website in which users can edit and create content. It's an example of a range of contemporary web platforms referred to as social software enabling users to update online content directly from their web browser.
myLearning is built using the Open-source MediaWiki platform, the same platform which underpins wikipedia the online collaborative encyclopaedia project.
If you would like more information about wikis there is no better place to start than wikipedia's own entry on the topic. For more information on Mediawiki see their website.
Creating an Account
You can view all the pages on the myLearning wiki however to be able to edit and create pages you need to login. Currently only DET NSW staff can login using their domain profile. It is possible to create accounts for external users however these need to be created manually.
To login and create a new account please visit our Create an Account page which will step you through the process.
Your own page on the network
Once you login your user name will appear at the top of the Personal tools section. This links to your own personal page on the myLearning network. This is a good place to begin learning how to edit pages by creating a personal entry on the network for others to see who you are and your interests.
Use this page to create a personal profile, add a picture and some info about yourself.
NOTE: when you click on the page for the first time it will open a Link to a new page ready for input, once you have entered some info and saved the page it will be created.
You will see the following text “There is currently no text in this page, you can search for this page title in other pages or edit this page”
Click the “edit this page” hyperlink
You can find other team members pages by clicking on the View Users button in the Site Tools section. Simply click on their user name to view their pages.
Linking to your own user page
To create a link to your user page use the following format as the hyperlink User:yourusername for example Stephan's User page
Editing pages
There are 2 ways to edit pages using the myLearning mediawiki.
Wysiwyg Editor
Most things can be done using the Wysiwyg editor, the only exception is upploading and linking to a file where you will need to enter some wikimarkup in Wikitext mode.
Wikitext Markup
This comprises a native text based language which is used to format content, create links, upload media etc. It's relatively easy to learn and much simpler than html.
For example using media wiki markup to make text bold you would type '''Bold text''' resulting in Bold text or to create a hyperlink [http://www.del.icio.us link title] resulting in link title
