Learning Technology Mentors 2008

Program Description

Contents

The Learning Technology Mentors (LTMs) program focuses on building Institute wide staff capability to use and embed new technologies in teaching and learning. This will result in more flexibility and responsiveness to the needs of customers and students and enhance student engagement and personalised learning opportunities.

In order to achieve desired outcomes, this project proposes to develop a key group of Sydney Institute practitioners as LTMs. Initial LTMs (one at each campus) will form a network of mentors across Sydney Institute skilled in the use of those new technologies.

Teaching sections to be mentored will be identified by College Management Teams in conjunction with senior college staff. LMTs, who have skills in using the technologies will be identified through an Institute wide Expression of Interest (EOI) process.

Program Rationale

The TAFE Workforce Development Guarantee, a capability development initiative of the TAFE 21st Century document clearly identifies “using technology to do business” as one of five key capability areas to be developed for TAFE in the 21st Century.

This project also aligns with the Sydney Institute Business Plan 2008 identifying “embedding new technologies and personalised approaches in teaching and learning activities” as a College priority under the Products and Services key area.

Program Objectives

The objectives of this project are to:

  • Better utilise existing technologies to enhance teaching & learning practice
  • Build institute staff capability to use these new technologies
  • Be more responsive and flexible in the delivery of services to customers and clients
  • Enhance student engagement and personalised learning opportunities
  • Create an institute wide network of Learning Technology Mentors (LTMs)

Program Deliverables

This program will deliver the following outcomes:

1. A series of professional development activities designed and delivered to increase Learning Technology Mentor skills in the use of the following technologies:

  • Wireless and mobile technologies
  • Adobe Connect, an online synchronous communication platform
  • Learning management systems (Janison and Moodle)
  • Web2.0 technologies such as wikis and blogs
  • Resource development kits (laptop, iPOD, digital camera, software: Adobe captivate, Photoshop, Premier Pro, Audition, iTunes)
  • Smartboards
  • eBeams,
  • video conferencing
  • Mentoring skills

2. A 10 week mentoring program where the LTMs will mentor teachers/teaching sections that will be identified by College Management Teams (this is to ensure that the program is meeting the strategic directions of the Institute)

3. Embedding of technology in teaching and learning

4. An institute wide network of Learning Technology Mentors

5. An evaluation of the project will be undertaken by survey and focus group meetings.

6. A final report will be developed on the results and outcomes of the project.

Program Scope

This is an Institute wide project impacting on the capability of an estimated number of 480 staff members and enhancing learning opportunities for an estimated number of 9600 students. LTMs will be skilled in the use of new technologies. The deliverables for them will be to mentor and provide professional development to at least 40 teachers at their College over a 10 week period, thus impacting on the capability of 480 staff members (12x40=480). Mentors will be released to attend one week intensive professional development and 5 hours a week for 10 weeks.Teachers/teaching sections targeted by  LMTs will be selected by College Management Teams to ensure alignment with College Business Plans.

Learning technology Mentors Final Report

Result:

In conclusion from a quantitative analysis the LTMs mentored over a ten week period 443 staff and conducted 737 sessions. Petersham and Enmore (Bronwyn Crawford-Petersham and Deborah Lindsell-Enmore) were outstanding with 222 sessions, followed by St George (Rosa Ochoa) 149 sessions and Randwick (Vivian Cassar Patty) with 111 sessions.

Stataistic Technology Mentored

It was identified from the stataistics extracted from Zoho Creator that Wikis and Moodle were the most popular technology. Interestingly podcasting was more readily taken up than blogs which leveled in par with digital storytelling, then eBeams and vodcasting to follow.Surprisingly, Adobe Connect was low in comparison to even moblogging and the use of Audacity and the camera glasses had a greater uptake than Connect. The technologies such as Bridgit, Elluminate (web-conferencing tools, alternatives to Adobe Connect) and Virtual worlds were never explored by the LTMs. This could be attributed to firewalls and misunderstanding of Department Eduction and Training’s desktop sharing ability with the use Bridgit.
