Launch of the Wireless Lounge, June 2007

The development of the wireless lounge was part of the TAFE Online 2 Access to New Technologies (ANT) project that began in June 2006. The aim of this project was to implement a range of new technologies and conduct trials in Institute learning environments across TAFE NSW.

The wireless lounge gives teachers an option to be able to work away from their desk, and to be able to collaborate with fellow staff in a relaxed atmosphere. These are the technologies that our students are now using and expecting their teachers to be familiar with and have access to.

The lounge can be used by staff for accessing the Internet and Intranet using a wireless enabled laptop or personal digital assistant.

  • Conduct professional development activities for staff by Learning and Innovation using a wireless space
  • Access to online conferences
  • Group work and collaboration by teachers

The lounge is will provide teachers an opportunity to use and become familiar with these technologies before they begin using them with their students. Once the TAFE web services project is rolled out this room has the potential to also become available to staff to use with their students.

It has taken considerable time to set up the wireless network, secure funding for furniture and laptops and develop processes for utilizing and managing the space.

The wireless lounge is now ready for use by staff for individual and group activities. It will be formally launched on the 19 June 2007.
